(as always, feel free to skip this part and go right to the chewy, chocolate center!) Hey all! I just want to start off by sharing some good news. It has been a very exciting time for me as I just launched my new CEO group last week. In addition to my speaking and consulting work, I have partnered with Vistage International (formerly TEC) the world’s leading CEO member organization (15,000 CEOs in 16 countries!) as a new group chair in the Denver area. It’s a phenomenal opportunity for me to continue to grow in my skills and knowledge as I lead roundtable discussions and provide executive coaching for company presidents and CEOs as they help each other with their personal and organizational challenges. It’s among the most rewarding work I have ever done. Check them out at www.vistage.com But fear not! I am still deeply involved in my work as the Visibility Coach and this month’s article better explains my assertion contained in the tag line at the top of this e-zine! It’s a different way of thinking about creating important “connections.” If you see me at the National Speakers Association convention in New York, come up and say “Hi.” Better yet, come to my session on Monday afternoon! David Avrin (After the main article, please read all the way to the bottom of this e-zine to learn more about exclusive opportunities to work on your brand, your message and your visibility.)

By David Avrin – The Visibility Coach I don’t know if it’s true for you, but people always seem to come up to me and say “Hi!” Some believe rightly, or wrongly that they know me, while other recognize me from “somewhere.” It’s excruciating as I search my memory banks trying to put the face or name in context. I tend to respond to the greeting with feigned recognition and an innocuous: “Hey! What’s new and exciting in your life?” hoping that in the ensuing moments, a comment or reference on their part will provide the clue necessary to make the connection. Of course, I’m not alone in this dynamic. Perhaps it is the public nature of what I do, that my face and name tends to get out there. But the truth is that I recognize how essential it is for my business success that I both preach, and personify a high public profile. My work is all about touting the benefits of becoming, and remaining highly visible – and in doing so, I have to be visible as well. I would suggest that the same holds true for you. There is so much emphasis in business placed on the importance of networking and “who you know.” I’m not just playing semantics here, but I believe it’s far more important “who knows YOU!” The fact is that you can never know all your prospective customers, but the truth is that it is essential for my business success. As I always say: “If they don’t know who you are, they can’t buy what you’ve got.” I recently was successful in securing exposure for a client on the TODAY show. Her business and her opportunities have exploded since. Does she now know millions of new people? Would she know any of them if she met them on the street? Of course not, but they now know of her and her product! Nirvana! Earlier this year, I contracted to do a branding presentation in Melbourne, Australia from a gentleman who heard an audio recording of a presentation I gave over six years ago. I didn’t know him, but he knew me. Now, my lovely wife and I will meet him in person in October on the other side of the world – and I’m getting paid to do it! Was it serendipity that we connected? Of course not. Had I not presented at that conference – and put myself out there – the recording would not have been made and he wouldn’t know me from a Koala. Lucky? Maybe, but someone once said: “I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the luckier I get.” Every time you have the opportunity to showcase your expertise, product, service, location, name, jingle, logo or message from the stage, the big screen, small screen, internet, radio, newspaper or billboard, you are reaching exponentially more people than you will ever “get to know,” but they will certainly know you. None of this is meant to diminish the importance of developing and fostering strong business and personal relationships. The point is that one well-placed media appearance or strategic presentation from the platform, can trump any synergistic lunch meeting with a colleague. You can work hard to secure a meeting with a noted CEO, or you can speak before an audience of 500 company leaders, giving them a taste of your insight, wisdom and perspective. You can do a promotion at a local restaurant giving samples of your new beverage, or you can hire a “street team” at a large festival and provide 50,000 samples. Same amount of time – very different results. How well are you known by your prospective customers or clients? How many of them can you reach at a time? Knowing the right people can certainly play a big role in the success of your business, but who knows you can mean the difference between business success and having to dust off that old resume.
